The Government has announced a scheme to protect jobs in the hospitality industry and encourage customers to safely return to eating out. Find out how your business can be involved if eligible.

About Eat Out to Help Out

Which businesses can apply?

The Eat Out to Help Out initiative is for restaurants and other establishments serving food for on-premises consumption.

How does it work?

Eligible businesses who use the scheme will offer a 50% reduction, up to a maximum of £10 per person, to all diners who eat and/or drink-in.

No vouchers are needed as establishments will remove the discount from their bill.  Businesses then reclaim the discounted amount through an online service, supported by HMRC. Claims can be made on a weekly basis and will be paid into bank accounts within five working days.

When will the scheme be in place?

The scheme can be applied all day, every Monday to Wednesday, between the 3rd and 31st August 2020.

How will VAT be calculated?

Establishments will still need to pay VAT based on the full amount of the customers’ bills. Any money received through the scheme will be treated as taxable income.

What to do with your EPoS

To ensure the VAT is calculated correctly, users of our EPoS systems will need to:

  1. Set up a new payment type (rather than apply a discount) to use when the scheme is applied
  2. Manually calculate the amount to be paid by the customer
  3. Apply this as a part payment
